I get a lot of questions about homeopathy: what it is, how it works and what to expect. I thought I’d take a minute to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about homeopathy in the hope that you might be inspired to add it to your animal’s wellness plan. Let’s explore!

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is an energetic medicine system. It was discovered by a German physician named Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the early 1800’s. It is one of the most commonly used modalities of medicine in the world, especially popular in the Europe, Australia, South America and India. Homeopathy is sometimes confused with naturopathy. Naturopathic doctors (ND) have a multi-faceted approach to healthcare that includes nutrition therapy, herbs, acupuncture and sometimes homeopathy. But homeopathy itself is a separate system of medicine that takes 3+ years of schooling and training to be practiced in its entirety.

What is a homeopathic medicine?

Homeopathic remedies consist of highly water-diluted, naturally occurring substances that can be used to gently stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. They can be made from plants, minerals and even animal hair or feathers (obtained in a humane fashion). They are often given in a liquid or pelleted form by mouth.

How does a homeopathic remedy work?

A homeopathic remedy can energetically stimulate the body’s natural desire to return to homeostasis. How effective the remedy can be depends on the individual case. It can be highly effective in the event of a case well-taken.

How does a homeopath decide on a remedy?

A homeopathic practitioner will assess the subjects’ issues, what makes them better or worse, how they navigate through physical and emotional stress, the circumstances of when and how the issues started and any obstacles to recovery that might exist. This allows them to zoom out and look at the case from a holistic viewpoint.

How is a homeopath trained?

Formally trained classical homeopaths attend an internationally recognized homeopathic institution that applies the fundamental principles of homeopathy as per Hahnemann’s Organon of Medicine. They attend human physiology, pathology & remedy theory classes for a minimum of 3-4 years. In addition, they work under seasoned homeopathic mentors for a minimum of two years to receive their diploma. Animal training is obtained with additional schooling and veterinary mentorship.

What can homeopathy be used for?

Homeopathy can be used for any issue from acute to chronic and even as part of preventative wellness planning. It can also used as an integrative tool with other medical modalities.

Is homeopathic medicine safe?

Homeopathy is safe for people and animals of all ages including children, foals, puppies and kittens, pregnant/lactating mothers and seniors. It’s also a totally green medicine meaning that it does not have negative environmental impacts.

I hope these tidbits will help you understand this beautiful modality of holistic medicine better!
